Tovah Feldshuh, playwright Dan Gordon and the cast of "Irena's Vow" were joined by Broadway luminaries, and a group of African-American Rabbis headed up by Rabbi Benyamin Ben Levy from Temple Beth Belohim in St. Albans Queen. They all took part in a candlelight ceremony in commemoration of Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) immediately prior to the evening performance of "Irena's Vow."
First inaugurated in 1951, Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) is observed as a day of commemoration for the approximately six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust.
Irena's Vow is the true story about one of the most courageous and unsung heroines of World War II. During the German occupation of Poland, Irena Gut Opdyke (Feldshuh), a Polish Catholic, was forced to work as head housekeeper for a very prominent German major. Over a two-year period of service, Irena would risk her own life in order to save the lives of twelve Jewish refugees whom she secretly took under her care.
