On May 21st at Joe's Pub, the Miss New York Organizationpresented "Concert for the Crown," a scholarship fundraiser for the Miss New York Organization and Miss America's national charity The Children's Miracle Network.
The nonprofit Miss America Organization is the world's largest provider of scholarships to women. Last year, it made available more than $45 million in scholarship assistance. Kate Shindle (Legally Blonde, Cabaret) has more than a philanthropic connection to this event, as she was also selected Miss America 1998. Another Miss America, 1981's Susan Powell (NYCO's Sweeney Todd, Home Matters) joined her. Shindle's Legally Blonde castmates Nikki Snelson and Natalie Joy Johnson performed on their night off. The evening also featured performances from other members of the Miss America and Broadway "family", Tiffany Haas (Wicked, Miss Ohio 2002), Whitney Kirk (Theatreworks' Henry and Mudge, Miss Arkansas 2003) Christina Ellington Pares (Miss New York 2004) and Bethlene Pancoast (Miss New York 2006).
As an equal opportunity fund-raiser, there were also performances by: John Treacy Egan (The Producers), award-winning composer Brian Lowdermilk (Henry and Mudge), Company star Fred Rose, Matt Castle (Company), Darryl Winslow (Evil Dead: The Musical), and Kilty Reidy (The Drowsy Chaperone). The evening was directed by Jen Bender (The Lion King, Avenue Q), with musical direction by Castle.
