The Touring Broadway Awards, which are presented annually by The League of American Theatres and Producers, were announced in a special ceremony hosted by Tony Award-winner and Grey Gardens star Christine Ebersole, on April 16, 2007, at the Crowne Plaza Times Square in New York City. Awards were also presented by Tony Award-nominee Michael Mayer, director of Broadway's Spring Awakening and Tony Award-winner Natasha Katz, Lighting Designer of Aida. Among the evening's big winners were Spamalot, Chicago and Doubt.
A party thrown by Grey Gardens followed the awards as the kick-off celebration for the week-long Spring Road Conference. Later that evening, Ebersole changed costumes to perform with longtime collaborator Billy Stritch at Playwrights Horizons' annual "High Standards" Gala Benefit at Guastavino's (409 East 59th Street).
Ebersole is the acclaimed leading lady of the current hit Broadway musical Grey Gardens, which premiered at Playwrights Horizons last spring. For her performance in the musical, Ebersole received the Obie Award, Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, a special Citation from the New York Drama Critics, and the Drama League's 2006 Award for Performance of the Year, a distinction also bestowed on her by The New York Times and New York Magazine. She is a Tony Award-winner for her performance in 42nd Street, and other Broadway credits include Steel Magnolias, Dinner at Eight, Camelot and Oklahoma!.
