Last night at the Austrian Cultural Forum on 52nd Street a play by the most performed present day author in the German language was presented. Gabriel Barylli who was born in Vienna and works as an author, director and actor all over Europe was on stage to introduce his work called Butterbrot in German, which has had more than 150 productions throughout German speaking countries.
The novel based on the play has sold more than 300,000 copies. His play Honeymoon, which was created five years later as a sequel to Butterbrot, has already been produced at over 90 theatres. Both plays have been adapted into films, with Gabriel Barylli as author, director and playing the lead role. For Butterbrot, he has received the Bavarian Film Award for Best Dialogue. Appearing in the three man play were Alfons Haider (among other things Austria's number one television personality), Howard Nightingall, who has extensive theatre credits in Europe, and direct from New Jersey and New York City, Dave Moskin, a multi talented actor.
This was a fine example to represent the creative component of Austria, who most of us do not associate with the world of theater. I couldn't wait to ask my wife who lived in Vienna for a time, "did you like it more in German, or did it loose something in the translation"? Unfortunately, she had left Vienna before this play was written and while there, the concentration was on piano lessons. Music of course is what we most associate with the culture of Austria and this night was a fine showcase for the other artistic creations from that beautiful part of the world. Compliments to the author, the actors, the chef, the wine steward and the DJ for a very entertaining evening.
Christine Moser, Director, Austrian Cultural Forum and Michael Friedl, Head, Advantage Austria led off the evening.
