Phoenix Theatre Ensemble (PTE) announces that its winter rep will run from January 21 through February 14 with the world premiere of Glyn Maxwell's The Gambler based on the novella by Dostoevsky, and David Greig's dynamic version of Strindberg's Creditors, and a late-night production of Al Pagano's Filibusted, an irreverent view of the current US political mileau. All performances will be at the Wild Project @ 195 East 3rd Street in the East Village.

THE GAMBLER 1/21-2/14

Maxwell was originally commissioned by the BBC to adapt Dostoevsky's novella "The Gambler" into a radio play, which aired in 2009-2010 "Major contemporary poet Glyn Maxwell (The Nerve, The Sugar Mile, Hide Now) recreates the madness and mayhem of a world enthralled by chance, sex and money." - BBC. Olivier-nominated Maxwell has now adapted The Gambler for the stage, under the direction of Karen Lordi-Kirkham with PTE resident actors Elise Stone, John Lenartz, Joe Menino, Morgan Rosse, Matt Stapleton, and introducing new actors to the ensemble as the two leads John Cosentino as Alexi and Poppy Liu as Polina. Running time is 90 minutes.

CREDITORS 1/26-2/12

Creditors is set at a seaside resort where Gustav (Craig Smith) befriends an impressionable highly successful young artist, Adolph (Josh Tyson). Under Gustav's relentless questioning Adolph's fears of infidelity of his novelist wife Tekla (Elise Stone) come ragingly to the forefront. It ultimately becomes clear that the manipulative Gustav is scheming a psychological plot in this fatal sexual--part carnival funhouse-triangle directed by Obie Award Winner and Drama Desk Nominee Kevin Confoy. Running time is 90 minutes.

FILIBUSTED 1/29-2/6

PTE commissioned Filibusted by writer, actor and performer Al Pagano, which is a curated selection of the verbatim recorded thoughts and musings of U.S. Presidential candidates and other political public figures. The evening of politicos' unintended humor will be performed by Pagano and actress Amy Loughead. Running time is 55 minutes. Short trailer: https://animoto.com/play/HECe1dVMmrC2Tj6oeGey5g
