Soho Rep, the multiple Obie Award-winning theatre company, kicks off its first season as an off-Broadway company with John Jesurun's Philoktetes beginning previews begin October 11; opening October 14 at Soho Rep (46 Walker Street).
"One of the most innovative forces in contemporary theatre in the last 30 years, Jesurun's signature hybrid of vernacular and lyrical language, cinematic and stage acting, and lush projections come together in Philoktetes to create his retelling of this classic myth of beauty and brutality," explain press note, "Ten years after abandoning Philoktetes on an island, his fellow soldiers return to retrieve him, now needing him to win the Trojan War: Jesurun creates a war-of-wills chamber piece about a formidable and broken man unwilling to fight in his comrades' war."
Philoktetes has lighting design by Jeff Nash and costume design by Ruth Pongstaphone.
The US premiere of Philoktetes features OBIE-award winner Christopher McCann (in the title role); Will Badgett (as Odysseus); and Jason Lew (as Neoptolemus). McCann was last seen at Soho Rep in Mark Schultz's Everything Will Be Different; Badgett was recently seen in the title role of Target Margin's Faust; and Lew reprises his role in Philoktetes from the Berliner Festspiele production.
