Vocalist Peter Murphy, perhaps best known as the lead vocalist for the pioneering goth rock band Bauhaus, has had a long and popular solo career. Thin, with prominent cheekbones, a baritone voice, and a penchant for gloomy poetics, Murphy is often called the "Godfather of Goth." Artist website: http://www.petermurphy.info.
Formed in New York in 2003 by Brad Hargett and JB Townsend, multi-influenced indie rock band Crystal Stilts released their first work -- some singles and an EP -- in 2004 on the Feathery Tongue label. The first single, "Shattered Shine," was followed by a series of local shows and then a five-song EP on Woodsist in 2008. Later that same year, their debut full-length album, Alight of Night, was released by Slumberland. While the records were made by the duo, for live shows and the tour surrounding the album's release they were joined by Kyle Forester on keyboards, Andy Adler on bass, and Frankie Rose, formerly of Vivian Girls, on drums. After touring with the band during 2009, Rose left to form her own band (Frankie Rose and the Outs). The remaining members began work on their next album and the result, In Love with Oblivion, was released by Slumberland in April of 2011. Mere months later the band released the Radiant Door EP on Sacred Bones. Artist Website: http://crystalstilts.com/.
Noisy electro-indie pop group Small Black started with a name and worked backward: a housemate of singer/multi-instrumentalist Josh Kolenik came up with the moniker on a cold Portland, OR night. The name stuck when he returned to Long Island, NY and began collaborating with Ryan Heyner, an area musician who had mutual friends with Kolenik. The pair holed up in Kolenik's uncle's attic to record songs with vintage keyboards and samplers, spending the winter of 2008-2009 recording as Uncle Matt made surfboards underneath them. Small Black released their self-titled five-song EP on the duo's own CassClub label in October 2009, and released the U.K. single "Despicable Dogs," as well as a video for that song featuring Uncle Matt, soon after. Small Black signed to Jagjaguwar Records, who reissued the band's debut EP with two bonus tracks in 2010. New Chain, the band's first full-length, boasted a more polished sound and arrived in October 2010. Artist Website: http://www.small-black.com/.
