Paul Dobie Directs Carrie Robbins' THE DIAMOND EATER Image

Only three days remain to get tickets for The 29th Street Playwrights Collective NEW WORKS SERIES 2018 staged reading of THE DIAMOND EATER, by award-winning designer/playwright Carrie Robbins, The reading will be one night only on Monday, May 14, at 7:30pm at the Bernie Wohl Center.

THE DIAMOND EATER begins in 1980 when an old man walks into a proctologist's office (this sounds like the set-up for a bad joke, but it's not) with symptoms dating back 35 years. The doctor is amazed by the story the patient reveals: a harrowing tale of three men in a German concentration camp - a surgeon, a jeweler, and the Nazi squad leader whom they outfox. Based on true events told to R.D. Robbins, MD.

The staged reading of THE DIAMOND EATER is directed by Paul Dobie, who was Associate Director of the Broadway and National tours of Tony award-winning THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, as well as of Martin Short - FAME BECOMES ME. Paul was the assistant director of the Broadway musicals WICKED, ONCE, CABARET, and also the Tony Award-winning revival of GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS. Additional AD credits include SWEENEY TODD with Patti LuPone and Neal Patrick Harris, and the NYCityCenter's Encore Series' PAL JOEY with Bebe Neuwirth and Patti LuPone. Paul directs the politically incorrect comedy trio UNITARD, at Joe's Pub. He has directed for the NY Fringe Festival, Ogunquit Playhouse, and the Actors Fund of America. Paul is a member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society.

Scott R. Munson composed the music for THE DIAMOND EATER. Scott's music has been performed throughout the world in concert halls, movie theaters, film festivals, and on TV and radio. Stage performances include Symphony Space, Carnegie Recital Hall, The Greene Space, the Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center, and the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra. His film, TV, and radio performances include HBO, Showtime, CineMax, Netflix, CBS, MTV, FOX, CNN, Bravo, A&E, and The History Channel. Scott won first prize in NPR's "All Songs Considered" contest. His arranger, orchestrator, and music supervisor clients include Branford and Wynton Marsalis, and Harry Connick, Jr.

THE DIAMOND EATER, along with its companion piece SAWBONES, was a semi-finalist in the Theater at the 14th Street Y's 2018 - 2019 season's juried competition themed WAR + PEACE.

This earlier version of THE DIAMOND EATER (HERE) received six NY Innovative Theatre Award (NYITA) nominations, more than any other production in 2014. The play has since been revised and expanded.

THE DIAMOND EATER will receive a single staged reading on Monday, May 14, 2018.

29th Street Playwright Collective is dedicated to developing the voices of emerging, mature playwrights through weekly craft discussions and to fostering new work for the stage, with a commitment to gender parity in theatre.
