Paley NY's Inside Media series has announced events to take place through July. The listings include a SyFy tweet-up, Anderson Cooper moderating 'The Onion: Celebrating 1,000 Issues of Prize-Worthy Journalism,' a preview screening of 'Snow Flower and the Secret Fan,' and more.
On June 21, 'The Onion: Celebrating 1,000 Issues of Prize-Worthy Journalism' will take place. The panel, which consists of The Onion's Joe Garden, Features Editor; John Krewson, Sports Editor; Kate Palmer, Editorial Manager; Seth Reiss, Head Writer; and Will Tracy, Associate Editor, will be moderated by Anderson Cooper. Since its founding back in 1988 as a weekly college newspaper, The Onion has expanded into an omnipotent news empire, misinforming millions of fans through print, broadcast, radio, online, and mobile outlets. This month, America's Finest News Source surpasses a major milestone-its 1000th issue. Join writers and editors from The Onion as they look back on over twenty years of surreptitiously serious journalism and hilarious headlines.
Then, on July 7th, SyFy hosts a "tweet-up" with Syfy executives Thomas Vitale and Craig Engler for an open discussion about science fiction, television, and Syfy. They'll talk about what new shows and movies are coming up on Syfy, answer fan questions about TV and TV development, and give a behind the scenes look at what it's like to work at the channel.
On July 12th, The Paley Center will present a special advance screening of the upcoming theatrical release inspired by the best-selling novel Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See. In nineteenth-century China, seven-year-old girls Snow Flower and Lily are matched as laotong-or "old sames"-bound together for eternity. Isolated by their families, they furtively communicate by taking turns writing in a secret language between the folds of a white silk fan. In a parallel story in present day Shanghai, the laotong's descendants, Nina and Sophia, struggle to maintain the intimacy of their own childhood friendship in the face of demanding careers, complicated love lives, and a relentlessly evolving Shanghai. What unfolds are two stories, generations apart, but everlasting in their universal notion of love, hope, and friendship.
