Lysistrata Jones gets back in the game! This time at Pace University. A modern retelling of Aristophanes's 411 B.C. comedy, Lysistrata, Lysistrata Jones tells the story of a group of college cheerleaders refusing to "give it up" until their boyfriends win a basketball game. Penned by Tony Award Nominee Douglas Carter Beane (Cinderella, The Little Dog Laughed, Sister Act, As Bees in Honey Drown) with music and lyrics by Lewis Flinn, this pop musical is presented by PACE University's BFA Musical Theater Program headed by Amy Rogers. The show runs through November 17th at the Schimmel Theatre at Pace University.
Maggie Anderson and Adam J. Levy star as Lyssie J. and team captain Mick with Talya Groves as Hetaria. Lysistrata Jones is directed and choreographed by Jacob Brent. "I am blown away by the talent of these kids" says Brent. "This show is so sexy and fun and perfect because it's about college students. In this production we have added an ensemble to really round out and populate the school. In rehearsal we would always ask, is that sexy college? If the answer was yes, it was in the show."
In the show, according to production notes, "The Athens University basketball team hasn't won a game in 30 years. But when spunky transfer student Lysistrata Jones (Maggie Anderson) dares the squad's fed-up girlfriends to stop 'giving it up' to their boyfriends until they win a game, their legendary losing streak could be coming to an end. In this boisterous new musical comedy, Lyssie J. and her girl-power posse give Aristophanes' classic comedy a sexy, modern twist and take student activism to a whole new level."
