Sarah Jones' Tony and Obie winning solo play BRIDGE AND TUNNEL had her playing a multi-cultural collection of fourteen women and men participating in a poetry reading in New York's Borough of Queens, the most cultural diverse place on earth. But has she ever been criticized for stereotyping in her portrayals?
"Stereotypes are in the eye of the beholder," she says to WNYC Host Brian Lehrer in a podcast promoting her new piece about sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation, SELL/BUY/DATE.
The interview includes visits with several of her characters, including SELL/BUY/DATE's educator of the future, who explains how the show looks back at the year 2016, observing how different cultures regard issues surrounding sex and commerce..
SELL/BUY/DATE is presented for 12 performances only as part of New York Live Arts' annual Live Artery season. This dynamic multi-character, one-person play is inspired by stories of people, especially women and girls, who have been directly impacted by the sex trade.
This workshop production is presented by special arrangement with Manhattan Theatre Club. SELL/BUY/DATE is commissioned by The Novo Foundation and was developed in part at the 2015 Sundance Institute Theatre Lab at The Sundance Resort.
