Off the rocky coast of Cornwall we meet our hero, Frederic, who was apprenticed since childhood to a band of tenderhearted, orphaned Pirates. Upon completing his 21st year, Frederic rejoices that he has fulfilled his indentures and is now free to return to respectable society. Frederic soon meets the many unwed daughters of a Major-General, including the youngest, Mabel. Their tête-à-tête is interrupted when the Pirates return and capture the family. The Major-General proclaims that he, too, is an orphan and secures their release. Frederic and Mabel plan to marry, but it turns out Frederic was born on February 29 in a leap year, and he remains apprenticed to the Pirates until his 21st birthday. Scheming and hilarity ensue as the Pirate King, Police Sergeant and the Major-General's many daughters all work to achieve a happy ending.
