Theatre and politics merged on the third night of the Democratic National Convention when dozens of performers from the Broadway community gathered to sing "What The World Needs Now Is Love."

The 1965 hit penned by Burt Bacharach and Hal David was adopted as an anthem to honor the 49 victims of the shooting at Orlando's Pulse nightclub after Seth Rudetsky conceived the idea for an enormously successful Broadway for Orlando all-star recording of the song to benefit the LGBT Center of Central Florida. The starry lineup included a pair of Broadway favorites, Audra McDonald and Brian Stokes Mitchell, who had recently completed their run of SHUFFLE ALONG, OR THE MAKING OF THE MUSICAL SENSATION OF 1921 AND ALL THAT FOLLOWED.

The two Tony-winners first worked together in the 1998 original Broadway production of RAGTIME, where, as Coalhouse Walker Jr. and Sarah, they thrilled audiences singing "Wheels Of A Dream."

Perhaps that's what Mitchell was singing to the pregnant McDonald's new baby when this photo was snapped backstage.
