Actor, Monette McLin, has written a one-woman show "Phoenix Payne" as a way to explore her admiration of the infamous Doris Marie Payne. Monologues delivered by fictional characters, and some from Payne herself, allow the audience to choose whether Doris should be vindicated, or continue to be vilified for her actions.

Details: Doris Payne is currently the only black woman on record to single handedly manage a decades long career as an international jewelry thief. Though her actions are illegal, it makes sense that she be known in criminal history as a pioneer. Not as just another black thief. Doris set the standard on how a woman of color can repeatedly stick to the same smooth criminal routine around the globe in a high price industry, alone, without use of technology, and escape without a wrinkle. The only weapons used are a neat appearance, charm, and sleight of hand. Characters created for "Phoenix Payne" come from various ethnicities, social interests, and careers to shed humorous spotlights on the unbelievable adventures of the only real character in the show, Doris. Doris details her career in theft.

Her escape monologues have been adapted for the stage from the documentary, "The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne," by Kirk Marcolina, and Matthew Pond.

See "Phoenix Payne" by Monette McLin, Tuesday, October 16th @7:30pm; Tickets: http://www.telecharge.com, or call 212-239-6200
