The film version of The Phantom of the Opera was directed by Joel Schumaker, and stars Gerard Butler as the Phantom, Emmy Rossum as Christine, Patrick Wilson as Raoul and Minnie Driver as Carlotta. After making its world premiere in London on December 6, 2004 and opening as a limited release in the US on December 22nd, the movie musical was released to 907 screens on January 14th. The lavish adaptation cost an estimated 60 million dollars, and grossed a little over 50 million dollars domestically. When foreign grosses are taken into account, The Phantom of the Opera has returned its investment. The film version of the megamusical was nominated for three Academy Awards, including ones for Art Direction, Cinematography, and Best Song--"Learn to be Lonely" was written for the film and played over the end credits.

The stage version of The Phantom of the Opera has run for over 7,000 performances, and is currently second only to Cats as the longest-running Broadway musical of all time. Adapted from a gothic romance by Gaston Leroux, the show (along with Les Miserables) was at the vanguard of British pop operas that would prevail on Broadway for the next decade. The Phantom of the Opera's score was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, while Charles Hart penned the lyrics (with additional ones by Richard Stilgoe). The original New York production, which starred Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman and Steve Barton, won 7 Tony Awards in 1988--including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical for Harold Prince.
