Tuesday, November 21 is all about ventriloquist Jay Johnson and his side-kick Bob, now on Broadway in Jay Johnson: The Two and Only.
In honor of the puppet's 29th birthday, celebration festivities, revolving around the number two (as in The Two and Only) will take place outside of the Helen Hayes Theatre (240 West 44th St.). For two hours, beginning at 2 p.m., two hundred and twenty-two tickets will be on sale to the public for $2 each (cash only, valid from 11/23 through 12/24).
Each person in line for tickets will be entered to win a variety of prizes, including: two VIP Grandstand Seats to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade; two tutus from TuTu.com; a backpack from Tumi; two passes to Madame Tussauds New York; two special holiday gifts from Bloomingdale's; two basic ventriloquist dummies, donated by www.throwthings.com; dinner for two at restaurants like One If By Land, Two If By Sea, Trattoria Dopo Teatro and Gallagher's Steakhouse, and more. Those in line will also be treated to food from Two Peas and a Pot and a birthday cake for Bob.
"Jay Johnson's side-kick Bob made his network television debut in November 1977 on the groundbreaking comedy series 'Soap.' Still together after almost three decades, Bob is now starring on Broadway with Jay in Jay Johnson: The Two and Only!, along with a variety of other characters," state press notes.
Bob's day of celebration culminates with the unveiling of Johnson and Bob's portrait at Sardi's. New York Post columnist and fellow Texan Liz Smith will be on hand to reveal the portrait of the dynamic duo, which is one of the few portraits along Sardi's infamous walls to feature two characters together.
Jay Johnson: The Two and Only! opened to acclaim on September 28th.
"In his 30-year career, Jay Johnson has converted generations of ventriloquist-avoiding Americans with his unique blend of charm, anarchy and innovative wit. In Jay Johnson: The Two and Only! he deconstructs and demonstrates his lifelong obsession, aided by a "cast" that includes Bob, Amigo, Long John La Feat, Nethernore the Bird of Death, Spaulding, Arthur Drew, Jackie and Gaga, and Squeaky."
Jay Johnson: The Two and Only! is at the Helen Hayes Theatre, 240 West 44th Street. The performance schedule is as follows: Tuesday through Thursday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 2 & 8 p.m. and Sunday at 1 & 5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at www.telecharge.com or by calling (212) 239-6200.
