The New York Post's Page Six writes that original star and creator of off-Broadway's Hedwig and the Angry Inch John Cameron Mitchell could be returning to the show after Michael C. Hall ends his Broadway run on January 4, 2015.
A source told Page Six: "Word around the Great White Way is that the show's creator and original star will be donning the stilettos again."
HEDWIG producer David Binder did not confirm the rumor but did say: "We are exploring multiple options beyond Michael C. Hall's run in the show."
In 1998, Mitchell teamed with composer Stephen Trask to write the Obie-winning musical HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, in which he also starred as 'Hedwig'. Three years later, Mitchell directed and starred in the movie version and was nominated for a Golden Globe. His creation spawned a cult following across the globe.
Golden Globe and Drama Desk Award winner Hall is currently in performances in the title role at the Belasco Theatre (111 West 44th Street). The musical, with book by Mitchell and music and lyrics by Trask, directed by Michael Mayer, also stars Tony Award winner Lena Hall as Yitzhak. The production has received rave reviews and is winner of four Tony Awards and won Best Musical Revival by the Tony Awards, the Drama Desk Awards, Drama League Awards, and Outer Critics Circle Awards.
In HEDWIG, "Internationally ignored song stylist" Hedwig Robinson (Michael C. Hall) brings her fourth-wall-smashing rock and roll saga to New York to set the record straight about her life, her loves, and the botched operation that left her with that "angry inch."
