Official Update: Disney Comments on FROZEN's Future Broadway Plans!

As BroadwayWorld reported last night, Disney's FROZEN is aiming to hit the stage by 2017. According to a report by the Daily Mail, the movie musical's Oscar-winning songwriting team Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez met with the film's writer and co-director Jennifer Lee, head of Disney Theatricals Thomas Schumacher, and Broadway and West End director Alex Timbers to discuss their options. Lee is writing the book with guidance from the Lopezes, who have also written "a couple" of new songs for the show.

UPDATE- "As has already been announced, Disney Theatrical is working on a stage adaptation of the animated film Frozen," said Thomas Schumacher, President and Producer Disney Theatrical Productions. "It will come as no surprise that the EGOT-winning Broadway veteran Robert Lopez and the Oscar and Grammy winning Kristen Anderson-Lopez, who wrote the indelible songs for the film, will be working on the show and that Oscar winner Jennifer Lee, co-director and screenwriter of the film, will be working on the book of the stage version. No other staffing or dates have been announced."

In the comedy adventure FROZEN, fearless optimist Anna (voice of Kristen Bell) sets off on an epic journey-teaming up with rugged mountain man Kristoff (voice of Jonathan Groff) and his loyal reindeer Sven-to find her sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel), whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter. Encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious snowman named Olaf, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom.

FROZEN won two Academy Awards (Best Animated Film and Best Original Song with "Let It Go") and a Golden Globe (Best Animated Feature Film). It is the fifth highest grossing film of all time and the highest grossing animated film. Released domestically on Nov. 27, 2013, FROZEN posted the No. 1 industry all-time Thanksgiving debut and Walt Disney Animation Studios' biggest opening ever. The FROZEN soundtrack is the top-selling album of 2014 to date and spent 33 weeks in the top 5 on the Billboard 200 chart, including 13 weeks at No. 1. It is certified triple Platinum.

Tony nominee Alex Timbers has directed Broadway's ROCKY, PETER AND THE STARCATCHER and BLOODY, BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON (for which he also wrote the book), as well as off-Broadway's HERE LIES LOVE and THE PEE-WEE HERMAN SHOW.

The Lopezes are the Oscar-winning married songwriting team behind the sensational Disney animated film FROZEN. Robert has co-conceived and co-written smash-hit musicals AVENUE Q and THE BOOK OF MORMON, which both earned him Tony Awards. Kristen's show, IN TRANSIT, opened off-Broadway in 2010 and earned recognition at the Drama Desk, Drama League and Lucille Lortel awards that year. Lopez and Anderson-Lopez have written for television, film and stage, including the stage version of FINDING NEMO, songs for THE WONDER PETS (two Emmy award wins) and the Winnie the Pooh animated film. The husband and wife songwriting team are currently in development on their next project -- a musical titled UP HERE, with Timbers on board to direct. The production is scheduled to make its World Premiere at La Jolla Playhouse in California during the theater's 2015-16 season.
