The solo show Organic Sofrito or Other Recipes for Disaster will be presented at Emerging Artists Theatre New Works Festival. The one-night only performance will feature an audience talk-back and take place at TADA Theatre, 15 West 28th Street NYC on Friday, March 15th from 7 pm to 9 pm.
WHO & WHAT: Written and Performed by Venessa Diaz and named a "Bestseller" at the United Solo Theatre Festival, the solo show Organic Sofrito is a dark comedy that explores the connection between mental illness and the Latin diet.
The protagonist, Santita Soto is a Holistic Chef with a big internet following. She is a master at recreating Latin dishes that are not only full of flavor, but chock full of memories. As she nimbly executes each recipe, the audience gets a hearty dose of her painful childhood. Along the way, Santita reaches deep within and learns to forgive and unburden herself to reach her lifelong dream of hosting her own Network cooking show. The themes of addiction, love-lost, anger and regret are ever present in the lives of the women in her family. She vows to break the vicious cycle, but learns that food alone cannot undo generations of affliction. The use of spoken word poetry and original music are incorporated into the piece, as is the use of some Spanish monologues with English supertitles. Parental discretion advised due to strong language.
*Organic Sofrito is an Actors Equity approved showcase.
WHEN & WHERE: TADA Theatre, 15 West 28th Street NYC on Friday, March 15th from 7 pm to 9 pm.
