OOTB Presents New Adaptation of ALICE IN WONDERLAND at Alice's Tea Cup

Producing Artistic Director Elizabeth Flemming, Associate Artistic Director Ethan Paulini and Managing Director Frank Hartley will present a new adaptation of Alice in Wonderland in Alice's Tea Cup called Alice in Alice's. This brand new adaptation features Book, Music and Lyrics by Joe Barros and Rick Edinger. Performances begin August 11 and run through September 12 at Alice's Tea Cup - Chapter II, 165 E. 64th St in Manhattan. Showtimes are 9am on Saturdays and Sundays and 3pm on Wednesdays. Joe Barros directs and choreographs a cast that includes Cara Feuer, Rachel Handler, Matt Stairs, and Alie B. Gorrie as Alice. A development, world premiere run was staged earlier this month at the Weathervane Theatre in Whitefield, NH.

This 45-minute musical adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is performed by an ensemble of 4 actors with disabilities at Alice's Tea Cup in New York City. The show intends to engage the imaginations of young audiences through actor-driven storytelling using only objects authentic to Alice's Tea Cup and Alice's world.

While the characters themselves are not necessarily representative of specific archetypes or symbols, they exist as visions of Alice's imagination and psyche - to open Alice's eyes to her own experience. It is the objects that have symbolic meaning: the rabbit hole, the garden, the White Rabbit's ticking clock, the Caterpillar's mushroom, and so forth. In tandem with the ticking clock, the Queen of Hearts represents the very real threat of death.

The cast will consist of a cast of actors with disabilities which will allow us to create a non-traditional theatrical experience for children that highlights what makes these individuals' contributions both unique and extraordinary to the world of storytelling. We believe that it is vital for children to view those with disabilities as a normal part of our society. We hope to communicate the message that what society views as a limitation, is merely an opportunity for creation. This is, after all, what this story of Alice in Wonderland is about anyway - experiencing the world empathetically, and discovering it through new eyes.
