Tonight's performance of On the Twentieth Century was canceled due to an ill Peter Gallagher, and, as is normal for a show in early previews - the understudy (James Moye) is not yet fully rehearsed.
The show's audience however, was treated to an impromptu performance by Kristin Chenoweth when she was asked to deliver the news.
Tonight, Kristin and director Scott Ellis took the stage to explain the situation to the sold out crowd and to announce the cancellation of tonight's performance.
Kristin then had the audience smiling with an impromptu performance of "Smile". After, she brought out the 4 actors who play the train's porters in the musical, and we're told that they brought the house down with the tap dance number "Life is Like a Train".A production source tells us that the understudy is being rehearsed as we speak in case Peter (who has been performing through a cold for several days) is not well enough to perform tomorrow. The show has been in previews for only one short week so Gallagher's understudy is not fully rehearsed and it would be unsafe to ask him to perform with all the moving parts of the show. Get well soon Peter!Roundabout Theatre Company presents a hilarious new production of On the Twentieth Century, the Tony-winning musical comedy from composer Cy Coleman (Sweet Charity), lyricist-librettists Betty Comden and Adolph Green (Singin' in the Rain), Tony-winning choreographer Warren Carlyle (After Midnight, ...Drood) and Tony-nominated director Scott Ellis (You Can't Take It With You, ...Drood).
