North American Premiere of 3D Chamber Opera Comes to Park Avenue Armory's Drill Hall

Park Avenue Armory will stage Pierre Boulez's rarely performed magnum opus, Répons, honoring the visionary composer in the first major staging of his work in New York since his passing. Conductor Matthias Pintscher will lead the Ensemble intercontemporain and IRCAM-both founded by Boulez-in an unprecedented performance of the work as it was originally intended.

The vast space of the Armory's Wade Thompson Drill Hall will be utilized to achieve Répons' demanding configuration-upending the traditional concert format by placing the ensemble in the center, surrounded by the audience who in turn are encircled by six soloists and amplification. The piece will be played twice in succession, allowing audience members to experience the diverse sonic dimensions of the work. Featuring both acoustic instruments and live electronics, the piece exemplifies Boulez's audacious technological experimentation and his exploration of the spatial elements of music.

Park Avenue Armory's dynamic platforms-from the massive, 55,000-squre-foot Wade Thompson Drill Hall to the exquisite historic period rooms-catalyze new kinds of experiences for New York audiences that could not be realized in traditional concert halls, theaters, and museum galleries.
