The result of several years of planning, Dance Speaks Out: Lynchtown/Thistown is a multi-faceted project that brings Nimbus Dance Works into collaboration with The Charles Weidman Dance Foundation to present a rare staging of Weidman's classic work, Lynchtown (1936).

This seminal modern dance work, choreographed in response to Weidman's witnessing of a lynching as a boy in Nebraska, is recognized for the poignancy of its depiction of mob violence and hatred. In addition to presenting performances of Lynchtown throughout New Jersey and in New York City, the company will present We Acquiesce a new work created by artistic director Samuel Pott inspired by the socio- political activism of Lynchtown and set to commissioned music by composer Peter Saleh. The company will additionally work with students from five New Jersey high schools guiding these students to create dances that explore socio-political issues relevant to their own lives.

On June 9th in a gala statewide event, the five participating high schools will join Nimbus Dance Works at Rutgers University's Mastrobuono Theater to perform Lynchtown and the newly-created student dances. Finally, the company has enlisted the Professor Jeff Friedman of Rutgers University with support from the New Jersey Council on the Humanities to present a related multi-media lecture series in three New Jersey communities. The project embodies Nimbus Dance Works' broader mission to bring concert dance into direct and interactive relationships with audiences and communities.

Schools participating in the Dance Speaks Out project represent a diverse cross section of New Jersey communities and include: Henry Snyder High School (Jersey City), County Prep High School (Jersey City), Newark Arts High School (Newark), Hi Tech High School (North Bergen), and Ocean County Vocational Technical School (Lakehurst). While getting exposure to working with professional artists from Nimbus Dance Works, students also develop their ability to articulate themselves about social and political issues that impact them and their communities. Beginning with figures such as Charles Weidman, Martha Graham, and Doris Humphrey, modern dance has a long history of social and political activism which New Jersey dance students learn about and become part of.

Building additional perspective on the project and its subject matter, Rutgers professor Jeff Friedman will present three free lecture discussions on Lynchtown and the legacy of social activism in dance. Titled "Charles Weidman's Lynchtown: American Dialectics, Moral Questions and the Art of Persuasion", the lectures are supported by a grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Humanities and will take place at Centenary College, Hackettstown, April 26th, 7pm; Tachair Bookstore, Jersey City, May 7th, 7pm, Highland Park Public Library, Highland Park, May 23rd, 7pm. In addition to Dr. Friedman's insights and analysis, the lectures will include a live dance demonstration, and archival film and photos.

Says Samuel Pott, Artistic Director of Nimbus Dance Works: "After three years of work developing this project, it is extremely gratifying to see how this timeless dance work Lynchtown retains its power and ability to move audiences and stir a response. Mob mentality and its social implications are relevant to so many of the issues faced by our communities; and dance is a perfect medium to explore and reflect on this subject."
