Forgetting The Details, a solo show written by and featuring beautiful Filipina-American actress/comedienne Nicole Maxali, opens at The White Box (440 Lafayette Street) on Wednesday August 13th as part of the 15th Annual New York Fringe Festival. Paul Stein directs this endearing and humorous performance piece that addresses the timely topic of how to handle the sudden mental deterioration of a beloved relative while giving an insider's perspective on the tightly knit Filipino culture.
One day Nicole Maxali returned to the San Francisco house she shared with her grandmother to find all the locks changed because her "lola" (Filipino Tagalog language for grandma) was convinced that a thief had stolen her wedding ring. Along with driving on the wrong side of the street and shop-lifting hip hop wear with the censors still attached, there were signs that began to reveal her once lively and resourceful grandmother's descent into dementia. As the youngest in the family, Nicole was expected to remain at home and be the caregiver. Should she become a live-in nurse to her "lola" or pursue her dream of becoming the first Filipina-American actress to win an Academy Award? Dedicating herself to her acting, she created a schism between herself and her father, a would-be artist and musician whose own dreams of success went unsupported. Then when an unexpected family loss occurs, Nicole learns from her both her grandmother and father that humanity lies in the bigger picture...not the details!
Nicole Maxali performed her first solo show, Identification Please with the guidance of acclaimed comic/solo performer and FX's "Totally Biased" host, W. Kamau Bell. Under the direction of Comedy Central Stage's Paul Stein she first performed Forgetting The Details at San Francisco's Bindlestiff Studios to rave reviews and sold out houses. She presented the show again last year at the Minnesota Fringe Festival. Earlier this year she performed I Heart Lola at Joe's Pub in the Public Theater. Her film and TV credits include Glory Boy Days that premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival, the Sci-fi web series Eve: Beauty and The Blade, the dramatic short film REVE that premiered at Spain's Marbella International Film Festival and the award winning independent film Fruitvale Station produced by Forest Whitaker and directed by Ryan Coogler.
Paul Stein was the associate producer of the HBO Workspace and talent consultant for HBO comedy festivals. He is currently the Artistic Director of the Comedy Central Stage in Hollywood. He has staged numerous solo shows in New York, L.A. and Toronto, including performances at Solo Nova Festival, New York Fringe Festival, Summer Works Festival and Toronto Fringe.
