David Lindsay-Abaire will adapt his Broadway play Rabbit Hole for Nicole Kidman, who will produce and star in the big-screen version for Fox Searchlight, according to Variety.
Kidman's company, Blossom Films, will produce under Fox. Per Saari, Blossom's head of production and development, will oversee.
Kidman's recent endeavors include New Line Cinema's The Golden Compass, the first film in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, Noah Baumbach's upcoming film for Paramount Vantage, and Warner Bros.' The Invasion, opposite Daniel Craig. Kidman has starred in the films Cold Mountain, Eyes Wide Shut, and Moulin Rouge, among many others, and won an Oscar for her role in The Hours. She appeared on Broadway in the 1998 production of The Blue Room.
Lindsay-Abaire's play is, according to earlier press notes, "the story of Becca (to be played by Kidman) and Howie Corbett who have everything they could want, until a life-shattering accident turns their world upside down, and leaves the couple drifting perilously apart. Becca, who must also cope with the distractions of her reckless sister Izzy, and their opinionated mother, Nat, takes solace in her unlikely friendship with a neighborhood teenager, Jason, who might provide the key to lead her back from the darkest of places. The play is a bittersweet drama about finding hope in the lowest moments of our lives, and the paths we take to return to the light of day."
Rabbit Hole ran on Broadway last year at the Biltmore Theatre and received a Tony nomination for "Best Play." Cynthia Nixon won the Tony Award for "Best Actress in a Play," originating the role of Becca. Writer Lindsay-Abaire's credits include the first draft of The Golden Compass. He also adapted the Cornelia Funke novel Inkheart for New Line. His other plays include Fuddy Meers and Kimberly Akimbo.
