Nicholas McGegan to Conduct Juilliard 415 in DRESDEN AND BERLIN, Today

On Monday, November 4, 2013 at 8pm, at Alice Tully Hall, British conductor and early music specialist Nicholas McGegan leads Juilliard415 in Dresden and Berlin: A Celebration of Two Courts--a program of rarely-performed works by Bohemian composers, and Juilliard's 12th annual tribute concert to the late philanthropist Jerome L. Greene.

The program features rarely-performed music by composers of Bohemia (the area occupied by the modern Czech Republic): Franz Benda, Jan Dismas Zelenka, JohAnn George Pisendel, and C.P.E. Bach. A highlight of the program will be Pisendel's Violin Concerto in D Major and will feature a soloist selected through a Juilliard's concerto competition.

The program features Jan Dismas Zelenka's Symphonia to Sub olea pacis, ZWV 175 (U.S. premiere); Franz Benda's Sinfonia in D, L 1.4 (U.S. premiere); Johann Georg Pisendel's Imitations des caractères de la danse and his Violin Concerto in D Major (U.S. premiere); Zelenka's Hipocondrie à 7 Concertanti, ZWV 187; and C.P.E. Bach's Symphony in E Minor, Wq. 178. Symphony in E Minor, Wq. 178.

Juilliard Historical Performance Director Robert Mealy remarked on the program: "Nicholas McGegan's program traces the development of some remarkably individual mid-eighteenth century musical voices who are rarely heard today; indeed, this concert will feature several works having their American premieres. Several of these composers, like Benda and Zelenka, came from the musically rich culture of Bohemia, and found their way northwards from Prague to the wealthy courts of Dresden and Berlin. All of tonight's composers were virtuoso performers, and the energy and inventiveness of their distinctive (and occasionally eccentric) musical personalities makes for an exceptionally vivid evening of musical entertainment."

Nicholas McGegan will be giving a Juilliard Historical Performance Chamber Music Master Class on Wednesday, October 30 at 5 PM in Juilliard's Paul Hall.
