On Wednesday, August 8th, NewFilmmakers celebrates the Tenth Anniversary of its NewLatino Filmmaker Series and screens the new Feature CRESCENT CITY.
Our 6:00 PM Program with NewLatino Filmmakers presents past favorites. The NewLatino Filmmakers Screening Series is the only independent Latino “cinematheque” showcase in New York City presenting the best Latino/a filmmakers and producers as well as works about Latinos.
* VICTORIA PARA CHINO, directed by Cary Fukunaga (13 mins / 2005) In May 2003 a refrigerated truck carrying more than 80 illegal immigrants from the Mexican border drove into the heartland of Texas. A deadly combination of heat and overcrowding lead to tragedy. This is a story of that journey.
* THE NEGATIVE, directed by Cruz Angeles (15 mins / 2007) During a photo hunt in a Mexican border town, a photographer's life takes an unexpected turn when one of his snapshots causes a boy's death. The Negative is a psychological thriller based on the worldwide folklore that photographs strip away pieces of the soul.
* BETTY LA FLACA, directed Hugo Perez (8 mins / 2006) Skinny Betty might just as well not exist given the lack of attention she gets from men, including her boyfriend Carlos. Her co-worker, Reina, recommends she have some work done to enlarge and enhance the most important part of the body-- her butt. When Betty arrives at the homegrown 'clinica' in Maria Dolores living room in the Bronx, she has no idea how much impact a little 'work' will have on her life.
* CRUSH, Directed by Gloria LaMorte (9 mins / 2011) Prom Night in the South Bronx, Michael is in for an evening of horror, hilarity and hope as he decides whether or not to man up and "kick it" to his high school Crush or "punk out" and let him walk into the sunset.
The our 9:00 PM Feature Presentation is Darren Marshall CRESCENT CITY (2011, 81 minutes) , a dark drama set in the storied city of New Orleans, Crescent City follows a lonely writer (Ben) as he deals with his feelings for Rob's (his best friend's) fiancee (Julia). When Julia’s two cousins (Ty and Holly) and their troubled friend (Billy) enter the story, it takes an unexpected and haunting turn.
NewFilmmakers screens at Anthology Film Archives on the Lower East Side at 32 Second Avenue & 2nd Street. NewFilmmakers LA screens in the
Stanley Kramer Theater at the Sunset Gower Studio and has become a leading showcase for new films in Hollywood. Many features screened at NewFilmmakers are now available on NewFilmmakers Online. New York Admission is $6 for the whole evening and tickets are available at the Anthology Box Office the night of screening.
