The Summer Play Festival (SPF) is currently accepting applications for Line Producers, Directors, Designers, and Production Stage Managers for its 2006 Festival, which runs from July 5 through July 30. Applications are accepted online through March 1.
Widely recognized as a vital element of the arts in New York, SPF has received more than 1,000 new play and musical submissions for the third Festival this summer, which are now being evaluated by a selection committee. 16 productions will be staged this summer at the Festival.
Two plays seen at last year's SPF have already moved on to commercial productions: Kenny Finkle's Indoor/Outdoor, which is currently in previews at the DR2 off-Broadway, and Catherine Trieschmann's Crooked which will see its British premiere at the Bush Theatre in London in May 2006.
Under founder Arielle Tepper (a producer of Broadway's Monty Python's Spamalot, The Pillowman, Raisin in The Sun, and Freak), the Summer Play Festival provides emerging writers, directors, designers and producers an opportunity to work on their material and their craft in a protected environment, guided by established professionals at NO COST TO THEM. There are NO submission or entrance fees. SPF provides artists with a budget for their production as well as any required assistance and guidance they may need. Each production gets a two-week rehearsal period and one-week of performances. SPF also provides industry outreach so that all producers receive information about all of the shows and have easy access to tickets as well as meetings with creative teams of shows. In addition, at no point will SPF control future rights or be subsidiary participants, in order to allow more opportunities for future productions.
Tickets to all SPF shows are $10. Being involved in an SPF production is a great opportunity to work in a professional environment surrounded by hundreds of other emerging artists.
