Tonight, October 20th, you have one chance to see a New York Theatre Barn (The Barn) exclusive Pre-Premiere* of the new musicals, BODY AND SOUL and LEGENDS & LORE at the Daryl Roth Theatre's D- Lounge.
With book, music and lyrics by Mary Liz Mcnamara, BODY AND SOUL is based on the 2009 documentary of the same name by the filmmaker Alice Elliott. Diana, a practical and tough-minded woman with Down's Syndrome, is the personal care assistant for Kathy, a woman with severe physical disabilities but no cognitive impairment. Can two people share one life!
Composer/lyricist Madeline Myers and book writer Jacob Combs present a sneak peek at their new musical, LEGENDS & LORE. Set in rural Georgia in the 1950s, LEGENDS & LORE explores the myth and magic of American folktales as three young friends set out to save their town by searching for a hidden treasure rumored to be hidden in the Appalachian wilderness. As the three friends discover, there is often much more to the stories we know than what we have been told. A celebration of the power of storytelling, LEGENDS & LORE speaks to the optimism of youth and the vital importance of community.
Derek Klena will headline the LEGENDS & LORE set. His credits include Wicked, Carrie, and Dogfight. LEGENDS & LORE was workshopped at the Finger Lakes Musical Theater Festival in the summer of 2013 and received a reading at ASCAP in December 2012.
The Barn is the only 501(c)(3) non-profit theatre company whose sole mission is "to give theatre a chance."
Monday October 20th marks your single chance to give these new works, emerging writers, directors, and actors a chance. And it is your chance to see untold stories that can ignite and insight the soul.
If you were not one of the first to see The Barn's initial reading or workshop of breakthrough works like Adam Gwon's, ORDINARY DAYS, and Brian Feinstein/Robin Moyer Chung's BIG FAT CAT starring Bruce Vilanch, you missed the only chance.
A Pre-Premiere is the moment before the beginning, the ultimate in theatre-in-the- raw. Before the formulas are figured out, you can formulate your own opinions. By attending New York Theatre Barn's monthly NEW WORKS SERIES, now in its 7th year, you increase your chances of being able to say, "I was there when...". Every musical has a beginning, and only a select few are part of each inaugural audience. The chance of being there only comes once.
The Daryl Roth Theatre is located at 101 East 15th Street at Union Square East (D- Lounge, basement level) in New York City. Tickets are $15 at the door, or visit OvationTix for advanced ticket sales: https://web.ovationtix.com/trs/pe.c/9947078. Students/BMI members are $10. All tickets require a 2-drink minimum.
