New York Live Arts presents choreographer Gillian Walsh and her latest piece xgzdiiiiiicdiirrwjfffffffff (pronounced grief), commissioned by New York Live Arts and presented through its Live Feed creative residency program. The performances will take place November 16-19 at 8:00PM at New York Live Arts studio. For tickets and information, call 212 924 0077 or visit livearts.
Known for creating "... stillness... so dense it could devour..." (The New York Times), Walsh finds formalism in an infinite abyss. Her work is stark, austere and quiet. She works with appropriated source materials: choreography, codes and texts that she approaches as equal objects. In xgzdiiiiiicdiirrwjfffffffff, Walsh outsources content from formulaic Instagram videos and conversations between luminary male artists. The first iteration of this work used a conversation between Bill T. Jones and Steve Paxton from a 1983 Movement Research Studies Project. In order to undercut the notion of the "premiere," different conversations will be used in each performance. None is more important than the other. Described as "a new work for the void, in the dance mall," by Walsh, the choreographer will perform with longtime collaborators Maggie Cloud, Nicole Daunic, Mickey Mahar, Emily Hoffman and Jesse Hart.
New York Live Arts supports and nurtures the creation of new work with developmental residencies and commissions for two years. Informal public showings offer a sneak peek into each resident artist's process before they hit the Live Arts stage. Live Feed artists Sonya Tayeh, Andrea Kleine, Larissa Velez-Jackson and Adrienne Truscott will also present full-length productions developed during their Live Feed residency this season.
