Now in its ninth summer season, New York Euripides Summer Festival presents six performances of The Madness of Hercules in three select outdoor stages and one indoor stage from July 31 through August 6. All performances are presented free of charge to the general public and to students and children.
In this particularly timely and moving tragedy, first presented at the Athens City Dionysia festival ca. 422 BCE, Hercules (Heracles) is driven insane by Madness, after having performed his twelfth and last labor. The play depicts humans trapped in a hostile world, sustained only by their love for one another. Courage and nobility are the themes of this dramatic masterpiece. Megara in the first half of the play and Hercules in the second, are innocent victims of powerful, authoritative forces that cannot easily be defeated.
Produced by Stephen Diacrussi with live music performed by Kristina Siapkara. Costumes and set are created by Gabriella Russo. Nadia Foskolou directs a cast of twelve which includes Drew Barksdale, Shaotian Cai, Kevin Dang, Devonn Duffin, Kenneth Dowling, Jr., David Hentz, Peter Mar, Julian Masters, Sofia Riba, Michael Ruggiere, Victoria Rulle, and Ken Solway.
