The Gallery at New World Stages, the two floor exhibition space at New York's preeminent home for Off-Broadway productions in the heart of the theater district, will present "Francesco Scavullo: A Photographic Retrospective," opening on Thursday, September 28th and continuing through November 2nd. Although there have been many exhibitions of Scavullo's work over the years, this will be the largest exhibition of his work ever mounted.

The Gallery's inaugural exhibition featuring the work of world famous photographer "Patrick McMullan, Patrick McMullan – All The World's A Stage," remains on view through September 19th.

Beverley D. Mac Keen, New World Stages' Executive Director, explains, "as we continue to expand our mandate, to include presentations from other disciplines in addition to our award-winning theater productions, we grow as the cultural hub of the Clinton/Times Square area. We are proud to be able to present a retrospective of the photographs of Scavullo to New York audiences." Martian Arts Services, a division of Martian Entertainment headed by noted art attorney Peter R. Stern, is the curator of the gallery.

"Francesco Scavullo photographed the most famous personalities of the 20th century. He had a productive and brilliant career until he died at the age of 82.  Francesco Scavullo shot every cover of Cosmopolitan for thirty years and created numerous photographs for Vogue, Rolling Stone, Interview, Town & Country, Seventeen, Harper's Bazaar, Elle and other top fashion magazines throughout the world," according to press materials.

"According to Scavullo family lore, the young Scavullo, no more than a small child at the time, upon first seeing Greta Garbo on the screen, stood up in his seat in the theater, mesmerized. 'I wanted to go get the beautiful lady,' he recalled just a few years before his death in 2004. 'I wanted to get to the beautiful big lady.'

From cultural icons such as Grace Kelly, Brooke Shields, Rene Russo, and Arnold Schwarzenegger to supermodels Paulina Porizkova and Cindy Crawford to stars ranging from Burt Reynolds to Madonna, Scavullo photographed the most beautiful, famous and accomplished people around the globe. Scavullo conceived many movie posters and album covers for Edgar Winter - the first in full drag make-up, Diana Ross, and Barbara Streisand.  Scavullo was a visionary, and was the first to put a black model on the cover of a major fashion magazine.  He was also the first to see the potential in a beauty book and published six best-selling books featuring candid shots of his celebrated subjects."

Scavullo's photographs are part of the Permanent Collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MOMA, Guggenheim and the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas.  Both portfolios, 'Song' and 'Hollywood Women,' may be seen at www.scavulloeditions.com

"Francesco Scavullo: A Photographic Retrospective" will open Thursday, September 28th, and continue on exhibition through through November 2nd.  The Gallery at New World Stages will be open Monday through Saturday, from 11 AM to 6 PM, as well as one hour prior to and after performances at New World Stages. You will be able to purchase limited edition silver gelatin archive prints by the world's most recognized fashion photographer at the exhibition.  The Gallery entrance is located at 343 West 49th Street.
