Lincoln Center's 2014 Mostly Mozart Festival Kicks Off Today

Jane Moss, Ehrenkranz Artistic Director, previously announced program updates for the 48th season of Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival, New York's acclaimed annual summer celebration of classical music, which runs from today, July 25 - August 23, 2014. The changes and updates include new singers, additional works to be performed, as well as artists and programs for pre-concert events. This information updates details announced on April 9, 2014.

July 25-26: The complete list of artists performing the world premiere of John Luther Adams's Sila: The Breath of the World, commissioned by Lincoln Center for Lincoln Center Out of Doors and Mostly Mozart Festival, include: Doug Perkins (musical director), Mark DeChiazza (choreographer), and featuring members of Contemporaneous, The Crossing, eighth blackbird, Face The Music, Grand Valley State University New Music Ensemble, Hotel Elefant, JACK Quartet, Meehan/Perkins Duo, Stony Brook Contemporary Chamber Players, TIGUE, and TILT Brass. Each of these artists are making their Mostly Mozart Festival debut.

August 12-13: The Amphion String Quartet will perform Barber's String Quartet, Op. 11, in pre-concert recitals immediately prior to the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra concerts on August 12 and 13 at Avery Fisher Hall.

August 12-13: Tenor Russell Thomas replaces tenor Gregory Kunde in Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra on August 12 and 13 at Avery Fisher Hall.

August 17: The pre-concert lecture before the 3:00 p.m. performance of Handel's Teseo by the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra at Alice Tully Hall will be given by Ellen Rosand, an American musicologist who specializes in Baroque era music. The lecture takes place at 1:45 p.m. in the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse.

August 17: The portrait concert of works by composer Sofia Gubaidulina with International Contemporary Ensemble now includes an additional work, Sotto Voce, for viola, contrabass and two guitars.

August 19-20: Pianist Igor Kamenz will perform pre-concert recitals immediately prior to the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra at 7:00 p.m. on those evenings. Each pre-concert recital will feature a different program. The concert on August 19 will offer Beethoven's Sonata No. 7 in D major, Op. 10, No. 3. The concert on August 20 will feature Lizst's Dante Sonata, and Lizst's transcription of Wagner's Isoldes Liebestod, from Tristan und Isolde.

August 21: Soprano Ellie Dehn, making her Mostly Mozart Festival debut, will be the soloist for the New York premiere of Cliff Colnot's arrangement of Messiaen's Chants de terre et de ciel on August 21 with the International Contemporary Ensemble.

August 22-23: On the closing program with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, the Concert Chorale of New York, directed by James Bagwell, will sing Chorale: Durch dein Gefängnis, Gottes Sohn, from Bach's St. John Passion, BWV245, replacing Chorale: Ach Herr, laß dein lieb Engelein. The new chorale is among other selected chorales performed interspersed by movements of Frank Martin's Polyptyque: Six Images of the Passion of Christ.
