WE ARE!, an original musical by the creators and producers of Mama, I Want To Sing, will give two industry workshop performances, on Saturday, April 30, and Saturday, June 4 at 4:30PM at the Dempsey Theater, 127 West 127 Street (between Adam Clayton Powell Blvd and Malcolm X Blvd in Harlem).
WE ARE! dramatizes the stories, the secrets and the songs of today's generation of urban youth born around the turn of the century. Based on the two-time Emmy Award winning "60 Minutes" double-segment feature, WE ARE! stars Vy Higginsenand the graduates of esteemed Gospel For Teens program in Harlem. Higginsen wrote the script with her husband and creative partner, Ken Wydro, after hearing the personal stories and testimonies of the participants in the Gospel For Teens Program. Real, authentic, visceral, emotional, and healing, WE ARE! is like A Chorus Line for singers and features a stirring blend of original music, and beloved pop and gospel favorites.
"This first generation of youth in the 21st Century faces a rapidly changing culture and new challenges," says Higginsen. "We hope it inspires audiences to view and consider this segment of American society with greater compassion and appreciation."
WE ARE! is directed by Mr. Wydro, with choreography by Elijah Ahmad Lewis, who will play Stevie Wonder in the upcoming Broadway musical, Motown.
