Producers Big Block Entertainment/Scott Prisand & Jamie Bendell (Heathers: The Musical) and Carl Levin (Rock of Ages) announced today that the new pop-rock musical ONE DAY will have its New York premiere this spring, for a limited engagement at the innovative downtown performance space 3LD Art & Technology Center. The musical will begin previews Saturday, February 7, 2015, with an opening night of Thursday, February 19, 2015 and is scheduled to run through Sunday, March 1, 2015.
Based on true journal entries written by teens spanning two decades, ONE DAY follows the electrifying journey of eight teenagers as they face ravaging internal struggles and exhilarating triumphs - from drug abuse to sexual awakening - on the passage to discovering their own truths. Their scribbled anecdotes, poems and short stories are brought to life on stage through a score, book and co-direction by Michael Sottile, choreography and co-direction by Ray Leeper ("So You Think You Can Dance," "Dancing With The Stars"), and cutting-edge, interactive projection design by Google Grant recipient Andrew Lazarow (I Am Harvey Milk, Brooklynite).
"We're so thrilled to bring One Day to the New York stage, and hope the piece will enlighten and inspire audiences the way we have been by the process of its creation," said Prisand. Levin continued, "Through its soaring melodies, raw energy, and exhilarating movement by the incomparable Ray Leeper, audiences can experience an honest glimpse into the minds and hearts of America's courageous - yet often overlooked and misunderstood - youth."
"3LD provides a unique, technologically advanced and fitting setting for this electrifying new musical that reflects the overwhelming digital advancements that entrance teens today," said Bendell. "Featuring interactive and state-of-the-art projections by Andrew, immersive and dynamic staging by Michael and Ray and a bright, young cast, One Day will be anything but your typical theatrical experience."
ONE DAY is inspired by Sottile's 1999 cult-hit musical Inappropriate, for which he wrote the music & lyrics, and co-conceived with the late Lonnie McNeil. Inappropriate debuted Off-Broadway and in Los Angeles in 1999-2000, and was hailed by critics as a "positively transporting" musical that "does an excellent job of conveying the primal emotional themes of adolescence" (The New York Times) with a "rich score and honest words that are ultimately, unexpectedly inspiring - put over with the kind of fervent energy that made 'Rent' so remarkable." (The New York Post). McNeil has since passed away, but Sottile continued to write new music, and harbor a passion for exploring the realities of adolescence.
"One Day was born out of a curiosity to know the teenage experience of today," said Sottile. "The pivotal issues that our youth now face - with new technologies transforming every aspect of the social strata - vastly differ from those even a decade ago. One Day is the result of several years of identifying and recording the pulse of young America, and giving it just the right rhythm, melody and physicality to bring it to life on stage."
The ONE DAY cast includes Brenna Bloom, Chase O'Donnell, Marco Ramos, Honey Ribar, Aaron Scheff, Austin Scott, Benjamin Shuman, Andy Spencer, Aliya Stuart, Nyseli Vega and Charlotte Mary Wen.
Completing the creative team are Lighting Designer Jason Lyons (On The Town, Rock of Ages), Sound Designer Drew Levy (Honeymoon in Vegas), Scenic Designer Ellen Rousseau (The Weight of Water) and Costume Designer Shane Ballard (Madame Infamy), with vocal arrangements by AnnMarie Milazzo (If/Then, Next to Normal) and music direction by Keith Harrison ("The Voice", "American Idol").
ONE DAY is produced by Carl Levin, Jamie Bendell, Scott & Marnie Prisand, Bruce Bendell, Sheryl Regan, Tom Ross, Whistling Mario Productions, Scott Benson and Big Block Entertainment.
