The Further Adventures of Hedda Gabler, Jeff Whitty's meditation on the post-play life of one of drama's most memorable characters, will be seen as part of the South Coast Repertory's 2005-2006 season.

Whitty, who won a Tony Award for his book to Avenue Q, has fashioned this play in which "Hedda lives on in 'The Neighborhood of Tragic Women,' an alternative hell where fictional characters are forced to endure until at last they are forgotten. Will she ever really die?" Hedda, of course, is the unhappy housewife in Ibsen's classic domestic tragedy. Previously staged at the 2005 Pacific Playwrights Festival of the acclaimed Costa Mesa, CA company, Bill Rauch will once again direct the play, which will run from January 8th to 29th, 2006 at the Julianne Argyros Stage, with opening night set for January 13th.

In addition to his 2004 Tony for the charmingly R-rated puppet musical, Whitty has penned a number of other plays, including Suicide Weather, Balls, The Plank Project and The Hiding Place, which was also performed at the 2003 Pacific Playwrights Festival. He has written a screenplay for an upcoming Jennifer Aniston film called Zora, as well as the script for a musical project starring Outkast's Andre 3000; it is untitled as of now.

The South Coast Rep's 2005-2006 season will include both classics and new works. Brecht's The Caucasian Chalk Circle will run from September 2nd to October 9th, Joe Penhall's Dumb Show from September 25th to October 16th, Garson Kanin's Born Yesterday from October 14th to November 20th, as well as Terry Johnson's Hitchcock Blonde (in its American premiere, from Feb. 3-March 12, 2006), Tracy Letts' Man from Nebraska (March 12-April 2, 2006), a to-be-announced world premiere (March 31 May 7, 2006), Kirsten Greenidge's Bossa Nova (April 23-May 14, 2006) and Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing (May 19-June 25, 2006).
