For many of us, one of our favorite moments from 1978's hit film GREASE comes when Sandy and Danny fly into the sky in the final moments, serenaded by their high school friends with the upbeat tune, "We Go Together."
Well that blissful image may soon be forgotten after reading one fan's GREASE conspiracy theory, which actually kills off our heroine Sandy (played by Olivia Newton-John) from the onset of the film. How to explain the rest of the storyline? Conveniently, it was all a dream!
The 3-year-old theory is now being re-circulated thanks to a thread on Reddit. The user cites the lyrics to the film's opening number, "Summer Nights," in which Danny (John Travolta) explains to his buddies that when he first met Sandy he "saved her life, she nearly drowned". According to the theory, Sandy did not actually survive on the beach the day of their initial encounter.
Redditor atomicbolt explains, "As she drowned, her brain deprived of oxygen, she had a vivid coma fantasy involving her summer fling Danny, where they shared a magical year of high school together."According to theory, the film's final scene, which sees Sandy and Danny defying the laws of gravity with their flying car, is really symbolic of Sandy making her ascent into heaven. To add to the depressing idea, the user believes that Danny also lost his life on the fateful day of Sandy's drowning. He writes, "Danny tried to save a beautiful stranger from drowning but lost his own life as well in the process. He envisions what his life would have been like if he had rescued her."
The new theory has caused quite an uproar amongst celebrities. Sara Michelle Gellar took to Twitter to share her shock over the morbid interpretation:
Hold on, this new #Grease theory blew my mind. Sandy died when she drowned at the beach, and the car is taking them to heaven at the end???

GREASE fans also took to Twitter to share their thoughts:
theory: all fan theories are just 'someone was really dead the entire time' https://t.co/ZI2MV9M2Uu https://t.co/7lwqvwvWiF

Just read a theory that #Grease is really the dying vision of a drowning Danny and/or Sandy. WHY YALL SO DOWN ON ANYTHING JOYFUL IN LIFE?

I can reluctantly understand the dead Sandy in Grease theory. But now I need someone to explain Grease 2.
