New York City Theater Company, Blue Pearl Theatrics is hosting multi- faceted children's theater classes which focus on building essential life and performing arts skills for students ages 6-11 years old beginning February 9, 2019.
The weekly Saturday workshops invite children to fully engage their imaginations as they perform exciting dance routines and exercise their acting abilities. The program is designed to introduce young actors and artists to different sides of the performing arts such as visual arts/set design, dance, stage management and drama culminating in a performance in New York City's theater district in Midtown Manhattan. The workshop is led by Janelle Stein, the founder of Blue Pearl Theatrics. Janelle is a passionate performer with an abundance of experience working with children as a drama instructor, and has directed many children's productions such as The Wizard of Oz, Beauty and The Beast, Cinderella, and Lil' Red Riding Hood to name a few.
"As a child I always enjoyed dancing and acting. I also had a knack for drawing and animation. However, I was also very shy and timid. It took many years to break out of it with the help of mentors who believed in me. I love giving back. Knowing that a child has increased self-esteem, made new friends, and enjoyed the experience of learning different aspects of the performing arts is extremely rewarding. So, I decided to design a theater program to help encourage children to find the power of their voice and build confidence." says Janelle.
The workshop begins with drama class where the children work on their characters, learn various line memorization techniques, practice scene study, and prepare for the spotlight. Next, the children receive instruction in dance choreography that will be incorporated into the upcoming show. Dancing together as an ensemble helps the children to further understand how to work together as one cohesive unit while having fun moving to their favorite tunes. During the visual arts/set design portion of the class, the students engage in prop making, and have the opportunity to design and decorate a massive backdrop for the stage. The students are encouraged to brainstorm ideas for the set and bring those ideas to life with the help of the staff. There are also opportunities for children with strong leadership qualities to learn the basics of stage management while helping to guide their peers through the preparation process and assisting backstage during the show.
The class places emphasis on valuable life skills such as teamwork, organizational skills, proper conduct and etiquette within a professional setting, compassion and consideration for others, the importance of comradery, and the necessity of preparation when approaching long term goals. Established in 2014, Blue Pearl Theatrics has successfully produced shows at some of New York City's most popular Off-Broadway venues.
