This past September, Joe Gulla was invited to perform his latest, "Faggy at 50" for the Fifth Annual United Solo Festival's opening day. It has gone on to become the festival's biggest seller.

In 2012 and 2013, United Solo awarded Gulla's "The Bronx Queen" the awards for "Best Comedic Script" and "Most Popular Show", respectively. "I am still reeling from that!" says the playwright.

"Positioned second in a planned trilogy, I had modest expectations for 'Faggy at 50'. But, my audiences have informed me otherwise. Their explosive reactions have sent me a powerful message. They leave the theater in a palpably emotional state. It's been a trip! Incredibly satisfying!"

"I'm up there sharing my story. I reveal a lot about my experience growing up as a gay guy in the Bronx. More importantly, I share what it was like coming out when there were so few examples of the gay lifestyle available to youth. A neighbor gave me The Village People's 'Macho Man' album in 1978. The construction worker on the cover rattled me to my core. My world was rocked! Never to be the same!"

"That may sound ridiculous. But, I believe we all trip over things that force us to confront who we really are. WIth that knowledge comes a responsibility... to ourselves! What to do with these discoveries? Well, that's the question, isn't it?"

Gulla continues, "My story is about a gay man (me!) who sets out to define himself. Yet, clearly, I've struck a nerve because 'this journey' is universal! My audiences are packed with all different types of people and, thankfully, my show turns out to be packed with lots of laughs! As a playwright, you can't plan this. You can only hope!"

Gulla confesses, "It's a little odd to learn that your real life struggles read as 'comedy'. But, realizations like this keep my therapist in Armani! Ha!"

The Fifth Annual United Solo Festival has added a new block of tickets for the final performance of "Faggy at 50".
