JERRON HERMAN

VITRUVIAN (Excerpt)

Jerron Herman is a dancer and writer who is compelled to create images of freedom. His process is supported by personal histories and social legacies of disability aesthetics that undermine notions of production in favor of welcoming. The nuanced pieces Jerron exhibits contend with an early childhood desire to create many worlds in which others inhabit.

VITRUVIAN is a dance and media work unraveling the classical image of The Vitruvian Man by Leonardo Da Vinci. Across several movements the character Vitruvian is embodied by a Black, Disabled Man to engage a new narrative about how natural phenomena and history live in the body.

CALPULLI MEXICAN DANCE COMPANY

Viñedos (Excerpt)

Calpulli Mexican Dance Company's repertoire is a carnival of folkloric traditions and original creations both choreographic and musical developed since 2003. Calpulli tells narrative-based stories told entirely through dance, music, elaborate and colorful costuming, and with the passion of our performers. Stories are conceived and created by Co-Founders Alberto Lopez Herrera, former Artistic Director, and Juan Castaño, Executive Director, and are told through the artistic vision of Artistic Director Grisel Pren Monje.

Through traditional Mexican dance, Viñedos celebrates the real-life stories of immigrant families who helped build California's wine industry.

A.I.M. by Kyle Abraham

Someday Soon (Excerpt)

The mission of A.I.M. by Kyle Abraham is to create a body of dance-based work that is galvanized by Black culture and history and features the rich tapestry of Black and Queer stories. The work, informed by and made in conjunction with artists across a range of disciplines, entwines a sensual and provocative vocabulary with a strong emphasis on music, text, video and visual art. While grounded in choreographer Kyle Abraham's artistic vision, A.I.M. draws

inspiration from a multitude of sources and movement styles.

Someday Soon is a new work that premiered at the Quick Center for the Arts on January 27, 2024. Choreographer Keerati Jinakunwiphat examines what flowers can symbolize in this celebratory dance piece.

Program B:

School/Day Camp Performances: select weekdays, July 17 -19

EPHRAT ASHERIE DANCE

Lore (Excerpt)

Ephrat Asherie Dance (EAD) is a dance company rooted in African American and Latine street and club dances. Dedicated to exploring the inherent complexities of these dances, EAD investigates the expansive narrative qualities of various vernacular forms including breaking, hip hop, house and vogue, as a means to tell stories, develop innovative imagery and find new modes of expression.

Deeply inspired by the soulful house sounds of NYC's club culture, LORE explores the way we connect to music, to each other and to an embodied wisdom passed down from those that came before us.

KOTCHEGNA DANCE COMPANY

KOUKOU: Gathering Together (Excerpt)

Performing in elaborate masks to the explosive percussion of a corps of brilliant drummers, Kotchegna Dance Company brings to life the ancient stories and legends of Africa's Ivory Coast. Known for its masked and stilt dances, intricate footwork and explosive energy, Kotchegna Dance Company has been embraced by audiences from New York's Prospect Park Band Shell and the American Museum of Natural History to Lincoln Center's Out of Doors Festival. Kotchegna's irresistible excitement and pulsating rhythms are an experience to behold. Under the artistic direction of master dancer and percussionist, Vado Diomande, Kotchegna is rapidly establishing itself as one of the most exciting African dance troupes in the United States.

Performing traditional Côte d'Ivoire dance, elaborate and explosive percussion with a corps of brilliant drummers, Kotchegna Dance Company presents the authentic village culture and customs of West Africa's Ivory Coast.

BARKIN/SELISSEN PROJECT

Accidental Suite (Excerpt)

Barkin/Selissen Project (BSP), a New York City-based contemporary dance company founded in 2009, presents the choreography of Artistic Directors Kyla Barkin and Aaron Selissen through live performance, film and workshops. The company strives to blur lines between the emotional and intellectual, dreamworlds and waking states. Shifting between nuanced movement and explosive athleticism, their choreography infuses fresh perspectives on complex subjects and cross-topic collaborations in areas such as mathematics, linguistics and human nature.

Accidental Suite is a dance meditation on connection, building relational tension through increasing levels of contact. The work draws metaphorically upon Complex Systems and how that connects us as social beings and brings us together to create a sum which is greater than its parts. Featuring an original score by Zac Selissen, Accidental Suite evokes chance encounters and near misses. In these deeply alienating times, it taps into the most essential of human needs, relating to one another.

Program C:
