Some presenters have been announced for the 21st Annual Lucille Lortel
Awards, which will take place at New World Stages (formerly Dodger
Stages) on Monday, May 1st at 7 PM. Tony Award-winner Bryan F. O'Byrne and actress/comedienne Judy Gold were previously announced as the co-hosts of the evening.
In addition, Joan Allen and Peter Friedman will be on hand to perform a scene from The Heidi Chronicles (in which they originally starred) as a tribute to late, great playwright Wendy Wasserstein.Presented
by the
League of Off-Broadway Theatres and Producers, the Lucille Lortel
Awards award outstanding achievement in Off-Broadway theatre. A
celebration at Ruth's Chris Steak House (148 West
51st Street) will follow the Lortel Awards.Four special awards will also be presented: the Lifetime Achievement Award to Wasserstein,
the Edith Oliver Award for Sustained Excellence to Betty Corwin,
Outstanding Body of Work to the Atlantic Theater Company, and for John Patrick Shanley, an induction into the Playwrights' Sidewalk.
The
2006 Lucille Lortel Awards voting committee is appointed by the League
of Off-Broadway Theatres & Producers, the Lucille Lortel
Foundation, Actors' Equity Association, and the Society of Stage
Directors & Choreographers, and includes journalists, educators,
and members of the Off-Broadway community.O'Byrne, currently performing on Broadway in Shining City (which opens May 9th), won a Tony Award for his work in Frozen, and was also nominated for The Lonesome West and The Beauty Queen of Leenane. Gold, who won two Emmy Awards for writing and producing "The Rosie O'Donnell Show," most recently starred in 25 Questions for a Jewish Mother.
Awarded since 1986,
the Lucille Lortel Awards are produced by the League by special
arrangement with the Lucille Lortel Foundation. Additional support is
provided by Theatre Development Fund. Of this season's shows, Abigail's Party was nominated for 8 awards, The Trip to Bountiful for 7, Grey Gardens for 5 and The Lieutenant of Inishmore and The Seven for 4.
