Renowned artist in LEGO® bricks, Warren Elsmore and his team display some of their most beautiful and intricate mini-buildings and models in our Grand Gallery. To add to the set, they will also be on-site, building a special three metre model of our very own museum. But don't let them have all the fun. Join us for some hands-on LEGO® brick activities from February till April. Get creative in the Builders' Yard, help us make a special sculpture of one of our most-loved museum objects, or build your own masterpiece.

Fossil Hunters: Unearthing the Mystery of Life on Land

Discover how life on earth moved from water onto land 360-345 million years ago through ground-breaking discoveries made in Scotland. See fossils unearthed as recently as summer 2015, meet the people who uncovered these remarkable finds, discover the scientific techniques used to extract and identify them, and glimpse what life was like before the dinosaurs.
This exhibition is informed by the findings of the TW:eed research project.

This major exhibition, organised in partnership with the British Museum, unravels the complex story of the different groups who have used or been given the name 'Celts' through the extraordinary art objects they made and used. Spanning more than 2,500 years, the exhibition explores history through these powerful decorated objects and examines how art styles have changed considerably over time, often flourishing during periods when different cultures came into contact.

Five years after his poignant exhibition Helmand: Faces of Conflict, renowned photographer Robert Wilson revisited Afghanistan as an official war artist to record the British troops' final tour of duty. The photographs allow a rare insight into the process of withdrawing from a war zone; capturing the essence of the human and logistical challenges faced during the transfer of responsibility and withdrawal.
Helmand Return is created by Robert Wilson, curated by Catherine Collins and Rhiannon Adam, and loaned by Gallery One and a Half.

Join the Mars Master Constructors for an out-of-this-world LEGO® brick build. Construct pods, buildings, labs, habitats, and anything else you think that humans need to live on another planet. The Festival's first building has been designed and crafted by renowned artist in LEGO® bricks, Warren Elsmore. Now it is up to you to add to the Mars landscape and help construct the first colony.
From explosive chemistry to marvellous medicine, discover science with real scientists from The University of Edinburgh and visit the National Museum of Scotland's Learning Centre for free, family-friendly activities.

Tales from the Front: The Thin Red Line

Meet best-selling author and historian Allan Burnett as he brings back to life a range of museum exhibits and takes audiences back in time to October 1854. On that day a thinly spread out, red-coated line of kilted Highlanders stood their ground against a Russian cavalry advance at the Battle of Balaclava.
Wearing full authentic replica uniform as worn by the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders in 1854, Allan explains the background to the Crimean War and the famous 'Thin Red Line'.
