National Comedy Theatre (NCT) today announced dates for their popular two-week summer Teen Improv Comedy Camps. Sessions will be held July 25th-August 5th and August 8th - August 19th at NCT's resident stage on India Street. For the first year, NCT is also accepting submissions for student scholarships. Applications must be received by April 15th, 2016. Scholarship recipients will be announced April 20th, 2016. There are four scholarships available - two for each camp.
Designed for students ages 14-17, NCT's summer Teen Improv Comedy Camp provides students the option of studying improvisation, sketch writing, or taking both classes. Students are trained in the performance and writing skills necessary to continue creating long after camp ends.
Improvisation: (think "Whose Line Is It Anyways")
Campers learn improvisation with the world famous National Comedy Theatre. The workshop features fundamentals of stagework and improvisational comedy, character and scene development, self-confidence, living "in the moment," and the experience of planning and putting on a full performance open to family and friends.
Sketch Comedy Writing: (think "Saturday Night Live")
"What is funny and why?" is where campers begin in sketch writing. Through scene study and improvisation, students will begin to answer that question and write/develop their own scenes focusing on structure, character, and timing. The second week focuses on final performances - writing rewriting and rehearsing scenes in preparation for the invited show, a structure very similar to professional sketch comedy shows like SNL
NCT Artistic Director, Gary Kramer, shared "Our summer camp intensives are one of the most satisfying parts of our work here at NCT. I love watching kids find confidence and friendships as they explore writing and performing together - creating and thinking on their feet. Every year parents tell us how exploring our Teen Improv Comedy Camps are the favorite part of our their teen's summer. This year, in an effort to make this experience more accessible, we budgeted for a scholarship to share our summer camp with four additional teens based on need."
Scholarship Application: (Deadline April 15, 2016). Families with students (age 14-17) may submit their application for a camp scholarship here: http://goo.gl/7flk9b.
