The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts celebrates the centennial of one of the most versatile, innovative and influential artists of the twentieth century, Alwin Nikolais, in the multimedia exhibition Alwin Nikolais' Total Theater of Motion. The exhibit will run from October 21, 2010 through January 15, 2011 in the Vincent Astor Gallery at the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center.
Gallery visitors will be immersed in a theatrical world of color, sound, motion, and light. They will experience amazing lighting effects Nikolais created, hear sound he composed, examine costumes he designed, and see videos of his stage dances and ground breaking works for television. On display for the first time will be artifacts, documents, designs, and photographs from the archival collections of the Performing Arts Library.
The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts gratefully acknowledges the leadership support of Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman. Additional support for exhibitions has been provided by Judy R. and Alfred A. Rosenberg and the Miriam and Harold Steinberg Foundation.
Primary funding for Alwin Nikolais' Total Theater of Motion has been provided by St. Aton Foundation, Inc., Mr. & Mrs. Edward Nicoll, and The Nikolais/Louis Alumni and Friends.
