NYC Parks will join the NY/NJ Super Bowl Host Committee and the NFL to give trees in the Bronx a little "TreeLC" to ensure their long-term health and survival through stewardship on Thursday, October 10, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Pelham Bay Park (Hunter Island).

NYC Parks has partnered with the NY/NJ Super Bowl Host Committee and the NFL to help take care of one of your neighborhood's greatest assets - its growing forest.

Throughout the day volunteers will pull weeds, remove invasive vegetation, add mulch, and clean up litter. Volunteer events will be hosted at other parks citywide throughout the week at parks including Marine Park in Brooklyn, Kissena Park in Queens, Ocean Breeze Park in Staten Island, and HighbridgePark in Manhattan.

"TreeLC Week" will culminate with the City's largest planting day on October 19, when 20,000 trees and 5,000 shrubs will be planted in Rockaway.

Reforestation is a key component of MillionTreesNYC (MTNYC), providing over one-third of the total trees to be planted in the campaign. This effort, building on the work that Parks' Natural Resources Group (NRG) has been conducting since 1984, is transforming landscapes in areas throughout New York City.

MTNYC's goal is to establish new, ecologically healthy, multi-story forests. Multi-story forest plant communities are composed of large canopy trees like oak, sweetgum and tulip, smaller understory trees including dogwood and sassafras, shrubs, and herbaceous plants. New forests help expand canopy cover in New York City, increasing a myriad environmental benefits including storm water capture, lower summer air temperatures, cleaner air, preserve wildlife habitat, and increase biodiversity.
