NYC Parks Announces Spring Launch of Volunteer Ambassador Program, 4/28

It was announced yesterday, April 28, that this spring, NYC Parks will launch the Greeter Corps, a volunteer team of ambassadors whose job it is to represent Parks in the community.  Building on the success of the Parks Opportunity Program (POP) Greeter program and the Central Park Greeter program, volunteers will welcome patrons at entrances to parks, beaches, and playgrounds, inform patrons of available amenities and programs, gauge the public's opinion and interests, and serve as eyes and ears for the park's condition and environment. 

"One of the best ways for New Yorkers to ensure the continued vitality of their neighborhood parks during challenging economic times is to donate some of their spare time," said Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe. "The Greeter Corps will welcome park visitors and set an example for everyone to take ownership of the city's green spaces.  If you have an interest in your community and enjoy spending time outdoors, or want to learn more about horticulture, I encourage you to sign up to be an ambassador of parks."

Most importantly, the Greeter Corps will help keep Parks safe, clean, and fun. Where possible, greeters can assist with horticulture and maintenance and monitor recycling bins. They will also spearhead the Parks "Anti-Litter Initiative" by encouraging sports leagues, picnickers, and patrons to use garbage bags and bins.  

Parks is recruiting greeters for locations in all five boroughs.  Participants will receive a T-shirt and hat, VIP tickets to Parks events, and other prizes for participating.  Greeters will be requested to commit at least 50 hours from May to September 2010, with weekly shifts of four hours each.  All registered volunteer greeters will receive an orientation prior to the beginning of their shifts. Interested volunteers can register and find more information at http://nyc.gov/parks/greetercorps.
