Comedians and writers always pull from their real life trials, tribulations, setbacks and tragedies to generate material. So it was only natural for Shawn Wickens to use a concussion from this past winter as inspiration for some jokes. Though in the midst of his concussed and confused state, he mustered the focus to write some very unique and one-of-a-kind content.
"Some of these 'brain injury' jokes make sense," admits Shawn Wickens. "Others are a little more... out there. Some I've tried to make sense of, others I just let them be. They must have made sense at the time." He also notes, that after slipping on the ice a few months ago, he was back to himself after a few days.
A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head that disrupts the normal function of the brain. Symptoms from brain injuries can last days, weeks or even a lifetime. The most severe TBIs can be fatal. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 153 people a day die from brain injuries in the United States.
The Sunday, 7pm show (also known as Sunday Night Laughs) at EastVille Comedy Club is presented by Herron Entertainment. In addition to Shawn Wickens, six other comics from NYC and beyond will take the stage. Past performers at Sunday Night Laughs have included performers who have worked with MTV, Comedy Central, Bravo, ABC, NBC and FOX. Wickens will donate a portion of his proceeds to The NATA Foundation which works to advance the athletic training profession through research and education.
Wickens is co-founder of Bad Theater Fest and Bad Film Fest. He previously interviewed more than a thousand people for his first book, How to Lose Your Virginity, a collection of shocking and humorous loss of virginity stories, and his writing has been honored by the LA Horror Film Festival, 48 Hr Film Festival, and The Paley Center for Media. His book, Tolerable Conspiracies (inspired by the fake news phenomenon) is available at Amazon.com/dp/1541082230 or ShawnWickens.com.
