NY Philharmonic and Bravo! Vail Extend Residency Through Summer 2022

Bravo! Vail and the New York Philharmonic have announced a five-year extension of the Orchestra's annual summer residency through the summer of 2022. The Philharmonic has been performing at Bravo! Vail since 2003.

About the five-year contract, Bravo! Vail Executive Director Jennifer Teisinger commented: "The partnership Bravo! Vail shares with the New York Philharmonic is very special. It is collaborative, artistically enriching, and enthusiastically supported by Vail audiences. Previous residency agreements between Bravo! Vail and the New York Philharmonic have been in three-year increments, but with Jaap van Zweden leading the orchestra into the future, we all felt a five-year agreement would underscore Bravo! Vail's commitment to this great partnership."

The New York Philharmonic has performed 90 orchestral concerts at Bravo! Vail since its first season there, in 2003. The Philharmonic's residencies have been marked by memorable concerts and auspicious beginnings. In 2003 newly appointed Music Director Lorin Maazel joined the Orchestra to inaugurate the residency with concerts featuring pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet and violinist Julia Fischer. In 2005 conductor Bramwell Tovey led the Orchestra with violinist James Ehnes and pianist Lang Lang as soloists. The 2009 residency brought then Music Director Designate Alan Gilbert in his Bravo! Vail debut. Violinist Augustin Hadelich - enlisted at the last minute to substitute for an ailing soloist - made his critically acclaimed debut with the Philharmonic in 2010 performing Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto; the success of this impromptu debut led to the Philharmonic's reengaging Mr. Hadelich for New York subscription concerts and frequent returns. Ted Sperling led the Orchestra in Broadway Night with the Philharmonic in 2013 (with Betsy Wolfe and Andrew Samonsky) and 2014 (with Christine Ebersole, Laura Osnes, and Santino Fontana). The 2016 residency featured a complete screening of Charlie Chaplin's City Lights with the Orchestra performing Chaplin's score live, conducted by Timothy Brock.

The New York Philharmonic has concluded its 15th annual summer residency at Bravo! Vail, celebrating its 30th season, July 21-28, 2017. The residency included six orchestral concerts honoring the Philharmonic's legacy on the occasion of its 175th anniversary season and the conclusion of Alan Gilbert's tenure as Music Director. Repertoire ranged from Broadway music by Bernstein and Gershwin to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and Mahler's Seventh Symphony. Bramwell Tovey led an all-American program in his 14th summer with the Philharmonic at Vail, and Alan Gilbert conducted five programs, including a World Premiere by Julia Adolphe, commissioned by Bravo! Vail, and pianist Inon Barnatan's final performance as the Philharmonic's Artist-in-Association. The newly formed New York Philharmonic String Quartet made its Bravo! Vail debut in the festival's Chamber Music Series.
