Nunsense is the creation of Catholic-school-educated author/composer Dan Goggin, and follows a fictitious order of merry nuns, the "Little Sisters of Hoboken," as they put on a fund-raising show at their school, Mt. St. Helens (home of the Volcanoes). Nunsense premiered in NYC at The Duplex in 1983 in its first incarnation before presenting an expanded version at the Cherry Lane Theater in 1985, where it won four Outer Critics' Circle Awards, including "Best Off-Broadway Musical." It transferred to the Douglas Fairbanks Theater on 42nd Street, where it ran for over 10 years, and has been presented all over the world in over 8,000 productions (and counting), grossing more than $500,000,000. During its New York run, Nunsense became the second longest running musical in Off-Broadway history, eclipsed only by legendary The Fantasticks.
Following the success of the original production of Nunsense, Dan Goggin went on to add to his franchise Nunsense 2: The Second Coming, Sister Amnesia's Country Western Nunsense Jamboree, Nuncrackers: The Nunsense Christmas Musical, Meshuggah Nuns: The Ecumenical Nunsense, Nunsensations: The Nunsense Vegas Revue, Nunsense A-Men, Sister Robert Anne's Cabaret Class, and Nunset Boulevard.
Nunsense will receive an all new production with a divine cast of all-stars at The Muny, the nation's oldest and loudest outdoor musical theatre, in St. Louis this July 1 - 7, 2013. Directed by Matt Lenz with choreography by Teri Gibson and supervised by Dan Goggin, Nunsense Muny Style! will feature Phyllis Smith from NBC's "The Office" as "Sister Julia, Child of God;" Broadway favorite Dee Hoty as "Reverend Mother Mary Regina" and Tony Award-winner Beth Leavel as "Sister Robert Anne;" along with Tari Kelly as "Sister Mary Amnesia;" Sarah Meahl as "Sister Mary Leo;" Terri White as "Sister Mary Hubert;" Lara Teeter as "Father Virgil;" and Ken Page as "Sister Wilhelm."
