For ART MADRID 2015, NH Galería presents a selection of works including sculptures and photographs by Ruby Rumié and Natalia Arias. Coinciding with Colombia's prominence as the invited country to ARCO 2015, the Cartagena-based gallery will show the works of these two Colombian artists, representing different generations and contemporary artistic attitudes.
Ruby Rumié, a recent participant of the First International Biennial of Contemporary Art in Cartagena de Indias, is known for questioning the artist's commitment to society. Her crowned vessels are the result of an intense creative and restorative experience with women who have been victims of domestic violence. She has held exhibitions in Bogotá, Barranquilla, and Cartagena, Colombia; Santiago de Chile, Valparaíso and Temuco, Chile; Miami, New York and Washington, D.C.; Rouen and Paris, France.
Through photography, Natalia Arias celebrates femininity, sexuality and identity in a delicate and sensual way, but also creates references to culture and history that criticize the positioning of what is considered feminine. Her works Prey, 2008 and Modern Venus, 2005 explore the notion of Venus and the different interpretations that have been given to this goddess and muse throughout history. Arias has exhibited her work in solo and group shows in New York, Miami, Chicago, St. Louis, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles; and in countries such as Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Puerto Rico and England, among others.
Both artists communicate through an artistic dialogue that deals with identity and gender. Each of them with their unique technique and style, encourage the spectator to reflect on women's talent, participation, and leadership in our society.
NH Galería opened in January 2011. Since then, it has specialized in bringing Colombian and international contemporary art to Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. Located within the historical walled city, the gallery exhibits renowned and emerging artists from all over the globe. NH Galería works in conjunction with Nohra Haime Gallery in New York, building a link that aims to enrich the international cultural exchange. The gallery shows a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, photography, installation and video, and specializes in the 20th Century secondary market. During Art Madrid, and following the gallery's interest in defining its mission as a Colombian and international gallery, NH Galería will also show works by Alvaro Barrios, Julie Hedrick, Valerie Hird, and Niki de Saint Phalle.
